The Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences promotes the highest standards in education, research, diagnosis, and management of diseases through the following disciplines: Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Orofacial Pain, and Oral Medicine.

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

The practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology correlates clinical information, radiographic imaging, and microscopic findings to determine a disease diagnosis. Our specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology provide didactic education and clinical consultations on the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. Our Oral Pathologists offer histopathologic examination of tissue specimens from private practices through the VCU Oral Biopsy Service

Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology

Our specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and staff of imaging technologists offer a unique blend of education, advanced imaging technology and excellence in patient care- guided by VCU school of Dentistry’s mission. The radiology section is responsible for pre- and postdoctoral didactic and clinical education focusing on applications of diagnostic imaging utilized in dentistry, radiation safety and diagnosis of the diseases affecting maxillofacial complex. Our centralized fully digital radiology clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art Cone Beam CT units, panoramic units, digital sensors, and a radiology consultation service for VCU school of Dentistry students, residents, and faculty.  Our Oral Radiologists offer CBCT and radiology consultations to private practitioners through their private teleradiology practice.

Orofacial Pain

Orofacial pain is a newly recognized ADA specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and management of pain disorders in the jaw, mouth, face, head, and neck. Our orofacial pain specialists provide evidence-based education to our learners regarding temporomandibular muscle and joint disorders, neuropathic and neurovascular pain, headaches, and sleep disorders. Our innovative VCU Orofacial Pain/ Oral Medicine Clinic provides patients with access to high quality, interdisciplinary care. 

Oral Medicine

Oral Medicine is also a newly recognized ADA specialty that integrates medicine and dentistry to promote optimal health. Our Oral Medicine specialist provides excellent care for patients with medically-related oral diseases in an educational setting that introduces learners to the field of oral medicine.
